From a conversation with Jackie Lewis in Canada, reported by Jim Lewis - JOHN LEWIS(1856-1929) was an engineer at Clydebank. He was married twice, a very good woodworker who could speak 10 languages and write 8. He was very religious and had a good musical ear.
In a conversation with Jim Lewis, Grace Mortensen said that John Lewis was born in Llandudno, Wales.

In 1891, John and Edith's family were in a tenement (apartment block) at 8 Tamworth Street, Camlachie, Glasgow. There were 12 families in the "stair", a total of 60 persons. Three adults were listed as unemployed, the others covered a range of working-class jobs, quite remarkable compared with today - carpet sewer, shirt machinist, cloth folder, block cutter, printer, weaver, dressmaker, clerk, machine maker, furnaceman, winder, weaver, retired weaver, hairdresser (our John), painter, two power loom weavers, apprentice baker, apprentice cooper, message boy, fish dealer, storeman, gas engineer, iron works labourer, stableman, iron dresser, cotton weaver, shop girl, foundry labourer, spirit salesman, warper, and two Salvation Army officers (a married couple).
