  Noted events:

6 Jun 1841 census: age 20(-24, daughter) in household of James Bowie at Fort Street, Leith, Midlothian, Scotland. 4

30 Mar 1851 census: age 29, "wife" of John Molvey at Laurie's Close, Leith, Midlothian, Scotland. John and Ann declared they were husband and wife, but in fact Ann was already married to Henry Porter.
I have assumed the baby Catherine was born to the couple, although the census only shows she was a child of John Molvey. 5

9 May 1859: Ann was married from 116, Glen Street, Glasgow (age 34, supposed widow but husband Henry Porter was alive and living in Dumbarton). 2

7 Apr 1861 census: age 39, wife of William Cardy at Govan, LKS. 6

2 Apr 1871: not found in Scottish census. Ann Bowie married William Cardy in 1859. They had a son in 1862 who survived only 18 months. By 1871 the marriage had obviously broken down. William Cardy, and his three surviving children from his first marriage, were split between two different lodgings. Ann Bowie seems to have avoided the 1871 census - I wonder if this was intentional!

3 Apr 1881 census: age 58, widow, general servant to Miss Amelia Dickson at 4, Hamilton Villas, Duddingston, Edinburgh, MLN. At this census, Ann Bowie used her maiden name and declared herself a widow! Meanwhile Henry Porter, her husband (married in 1840), was living in Ayr; and William Cardy (who she "married" in 1859) was in Paisley Poorhouse.
In 1878, Ann's only legitimate child, Jane (Porter) Mather, had named a daughter Amelia Dickson Mather. Perhaps with this courtesy, Ann hoped that her employer would leave something to herself or the baby.
However, when Miss Dickson died in 1888, her sole benefiary was her sister, Elizabeth Dickson.
Ann Bowie died in Stirling Poorhouse a few months later. 7

1886: Ann Bowie's husband, Henry Porter, died in 1886 in Dumbarton. They were married in 1840, and had two children (1841 and 1843). But by 1851 Ann was living with the first of several partners, and she had at least two children with them.
Nevertheless she was still Henry Porter's legal wife and travelled to Ayr to claim his estate, amounting to about £36. Quite a tidy sum in 1886.

Ann married Henry PORTER [306] [MRIN: 146], son of Francis PORTER [6192] and Agnes RANKIN [6193], on 18 May 1840 in Gorbals, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1 (Henry PORTER [306] was born about 1819 in Portpatrick, WIG, Scotland and died on 16 May 1886 in 179, High Street, Dumbarton, DNB, Scotland.)

Ann next married John MOLVEY [13049] [MRIN: 3700]. (John MOLVEY [13049] was born about 1824 in Ireland and died after 30 Mar 1851.)

Ann next married William CARDY [4658] [MRIN: 1454], son of Albert CARDY [6116] and Elizabeth LANDELL [6117], on 9 May 1859 in Calton District, Glasgow.2 (William CARDY [4658] was born about 1825 in Johnstone, RFW and died on 3 Feb 1888 in Poorhouse, Govan, Lanark, Scotland 8.)

1888 February 3rd. WILLIAM CARDY died in Govan Poorhouse, aged 65 of cardiac disease. Same Cardy as married Ann Bowie/Porter, as corroborated by parent details on death register entry. Also confirms that William was widower of Isabella McKenzie [information from Ken Stevens, a Mather descendant].
