Johan MUNRO [2367]

  • Born: 21 Oct 1894, Scullomie, Tongue 2
  • Marriage: William MACKAY [377] on 3 Sep 1955 in Edinburgh, MLN 1
  • Died: 7 Dec 1989, Royal Victoria Hospital, Edinburgh 3

bullet  General Notes:

One of the old folks in Scullomie told me, that JOHAN MUNRO was engaged to one of the Burr brothers who died in WWI, and that, tragically for Johan, the same thing happened again. The boys were probably Peter Burr (died in France 1916) and Charlie Burr (died in France 1918).

There were obviously close links between the Munro and Burr families: Johan's brother SANDY MUNRO later married JEANNIE BURR.

Johan continued nursing and ended her career as matron of an Edinbugh hospital - I believe this was Challenger Lodge, then a residential home/hospital for physically disabled children (it is now St Columba's Hospice, where I - Mary Young -worked 1977-1992).

Johan probably retired, age 60, when she married WILLIE MACKAY, a widower and old friend who was also born in Scullomie. They had nearly 20 years of happy married life together.

bullet  Events

• Johan worked as a nurse, hospital matron.

• 31 Mar 1901 census: age 6, daughter of William Munro at Strathtongue, Tongue. 4

• 1914-1919: "JOHAN MUNRO, SANDY and OLDER BROTHER MURDO".
This picture and the following present us with a puzzle. This is obviously Johan Munro in her war-time nursing uniform. "Sandy" is her brother Alexander Munro (1889-1943). But who is "older brother Murdo"? Johan and Sandy had no brother named Murdo. Their older brother was Hector (1886-1953). Presumably Hector also went to war, but so far, we don't know whether he was a soldier or a sailor.

• 1914-1919: "JOHAN MUNRO, SANDY ON LEFT, AND OLDER BROTHER MURDO".
Here is Johan in her dress uniform, with her brother Sandy. And the sailor, Murdo - but who is he??
