  General Notes:

WILLIAM JOHN BANKS and ANN CROSSY had their first child (William John) in 1871. Parents were declared as William John Banks and Ann Crossy (on the printed form, the word "formerly" has been scored out, implying that the couple were unmarried).
We don't know whether they ever married.
In 1881, they were enumerated in Workington, Cumberland as "John Banks" and "Ann Banks, wife", with their children, William John, Edward, Elizabeth Ann and Isaac.
Sometime after that census William John Banks sr. moved to Glasgow. He married Catherine McClymont in 1888, declaring himself a bachelor. The two youngest children also settled in Glasgow.
So far (June 2007) we have found no trace of Ann Crossy, or her sons William John Banks and Edward Banks, in the 1891 census for Cumberland, nor any deaths in FreeBMD index 1881-1891.

Argument towards proving William John Banks (Workington 1881) was William John Banks (son of John Banks & Eliza Ann Hewitt).
(1) Isaac Banks, who married Helen Barr in 1910, was the same age as Isaac Banks, son of William John Banks & Ann Crossy, in Workington 1881.
(2) Isaac's marriage shows his father's occupation as steelsmelter (same as 1881).
(3) His mother is shown as Ann Banks m/s Crosser, deceased.
(4) A witness was Hugh Banks. John William Banks' first child by his 2nd wife was called Hugh.
(5) Isaac was married from 29 Slatefield Street,Glasgow, where Elizabeth Hewitt Banks Wilson had died in 1909 (presumably the home of her son, William John Banks and his second wife, Catherine McClymont).
