Yes, the story goes, not only from my Gran Edith, but from the relatives in New Zealand who got it from Edith's sister Eliza Ann Lees (nee Lewis)....that Grandfather Hewitt .. was the head of the Orangemen in Belfast and he had gone out to the outhouse ... apparently, he was gone so long and someone went to check to see where he was. The story goes that someone had slit his throat (Gran's version); her sister's version is that someone smashed his head in.
Either way, rather gruesome and very sad. So, I guess we know why he passed so young in life.
