Spouses/Children:
John LEWIS, (4) [40]

Elspeth Mitchell Gray BEATSON [703]

  • Born: 17 Jul 1894, Kinghorn, Fife 2
  • Marriage: John LEWIS, (4) [40] on 19 Jan 1915 in Glasgow 1
  • Died: 13 Jan 1931, Edinburgh, MLN aged 36 3

Another name for Elspeth was Alice BEATSON.

  General Notes:

Note from Mary Young - Elspeth Mitchell Gray Beatson was already known as "Alice" by 1901 and throughout her life.

  Noted events:

1915: Elspeth was married from 55, Crawford Street, Glasgow (her parents' home). 1

31 Mar 1901 census: age 6, "Alice", daughter of James Beatson at 77, Salisbury Street, Kirkcaldy, FIF, Scotland. 4

Elspeth married John LEWIS, (4) [40] [MRIN: 29], son of John LEWIS [145] and Amelia Dickson MATHER [112], on 19 Jan 1915 in Glasgow.1 (John LEWIS, (4) [40] was born on 3 Sep 1897 in 13, Inglis Street, Glasgow,5 died on 4 Jul 1949 in North Berwick, ELN, Scotland 6 and was buried in Jul 1949 in Liberton Cemetery, Edinburgh, MLN, Scotland.)

Noted events in their marriage were:

Abt Apr 1915: Soon after their marriage, John and Alice Lewis took a motherless infant into their home, and brought her up as their eldest child. Elizabeth McFarlane Morwood was born April 5th 1915 to William Morwood and Elizabeth McFarlane. Despite much research, I have been unable to find any blood link between the two families, nor any trace of a formal adoption.

5 Mar 1917: they resided at Viewforth Place, Burntisland Road, Kinghorn, Fife, Scotland. Jackie Lewis was born in Kinghorn, at the home of his maternal grandmother. I'm unsure whether Alice was living there permanently, or had moved to Kinghorn temporarily for the birth of her first child. 7

21 Aug 1919: resided with John's parents in 17, Nisbet Street, Glasgow. 8

11 Feb 1924: resided when James was born at 1, Burt Avenue, Kinghorn, Fife. In the 1920s, many new housing estates were built in Scotland. Burt Avenue was part of a new estate developed in Kinghorn. A local historian told me that Burt Avenue was the first street to be occupied, perhaps John and Alice's family were given priority because of his war service. 9

13 Jan 1931: resided at the time of Alice's death in 1, Garden City Houses, Park Road, Bonnyrigg, MLN, Scotland. During the 1920s, groups of Veterans' homes were built for disabled British ex-Service men and women, and the work continues to the present day, see http://www.veteransscotland.co.uk/members/housing.html. 10
