1901: not found in UK census. On 3 August 1897, Andrew Beatson enlisted in the British Army for Short Service (3 years with the colors, and 9 years in the Reserve). He was in the Royal Engineers, and served in the South African Campaign of 1899-1902, being awarded the South African War Medals (King's and Queen's) and Clasps for Cape Colony, Orange River Colony and Transvaal, and King's Clasps for 1901-1902.
His next of kin were Robert Beatson (brother), 6 Tailor Close, Kinghorn
James Beatson (brother), 5 Nethergate, Kinghorn
and Walter Beatson (brother), H.M.S. Intrepid.

At the time of his marriage in 1919, Andrew Beatson was serving in the South Africa Scottish. There are no records of this couple dying in Scotland. Andrew Beatson and his wife, Thomasina Elder, probably spent their married years in South Africa, where Andrew had been settled for many years.
