My uncle John Mackay (known as Jackie to the family) was born on 15th April 1909 at 1 Hermitage Terrace, Leith. In 1925, age 16, he joined the Merchant Navy as a seaman and was in the Royal Navy during the 2nd World War - 23 years in Merchant and Royal Navy. After the war, he worked for a year collecting meter money in the Gorbals in Glasgow, then became a Chargehand Rigger in the building of Dounray nuclear power station. He was offered a permanent job there as a technician and worked there until he retired.
On 28th Dec 1934 he married Christina MacIntosh at 39 Spring Gardens, Abbeyhill, Edinburgh. Chrissie, a restaurant waitress, was living at 4 Argyll Street, Leith, and Jacky lived at 61 Restalrig Rd, Leith, Edinburgh. My father David was a witness at the wedding.
I remember Jackie and Chrissie living in Melvich in a house called Mo Dhachaidh. They had no children. Chrissie died in December 1995 and Jackie in April 1996; they are both buried in Strathy Cemetery.
