September 1917 George ... was one of a party of seamen sent to Chatham Dockyard in Kent after ... leave. .. to man HMS Vanguard ...ship blew up before they arrived ... they were placed in drill hall at the naval barracks ... 3rd September ... air-raid on Chatham dockyard ... this was the greatest single loss of life caused by an air raid in World War One ... Seaman George Gunn was killed ... at the age of 25, his brother Alex who served on HMS Pembroke survived the First World War and returned home to Skerray. Alexander's daughter Hughag lives at Clashnastruag in Skerray today [time of writing, 1998]."
