My daughter Julie and I found the Social Security Death index records for Alexander MacKay with a dob of 14 Nov 1902 and death date of 29 May 1973; and Hugh MacKay with a dob of 13 Sep 1906 and death date of 30 Aug 1971. We also found their names on the 1930 US Federal Census for Yonkers, NY. Alexander was listed as "Alec", arriving in the US in 1923. Living at the same address (150 Livingston Ave.) was his wife Margaret, also age 27, born in Scotland and arriving in the US in 1922. Both their ages are listed as 26 yrs at the time of their marriage (first for both). Also living at the same address was his brother Hugh MacKay, who is listed as unmarried and arriving in 1928. Alexander is listed as a carpenter and Hugh as an apprentice carpenter. We found neither of them listed at Ellis Island, so perhaps they came into the US through Canada.

Lucy Campbell to Donetta and Mary 2007-06-23 re Alexander Mackay.

Mary, I have located more info on Alexander through social security records, and a copy of his marriage certificate. May have found his wife's family in Scotland , plus her death record here in the States. I am trying to find out more information about whether they had any children. The following information is what I have written up.
1902 Births in District of Strathy, County of Sutherland records his birth on 14 Nov 1902 in Armadale to Neil MacKay, tailor, and Maggie MacKay, maiden surname MacKay. Marriage of parents is listed as 15 Oct 1897 in Thurso. Neil Mackay reported the birth, present, and signed with full name.
Per Mary Young and Margaret MacKay, he immigrated to the US ending up in Yonkers. We do not know the year yet, or the boat. As far as they knew he never married or had a family, however, we have found that he did in fact marry.
1928 New York State marriage license shows, county of Westchester, city of Yonkers, Alexander MacKay and Maggie Jane Noble applying for license on Oct 27, 1928.
The actual marriage certificate shows the following for Alexander: (see wife's notes for her info on license)
Name Alexander MacKay
Color White
Place of residence 77 Warburton Ave, Yonkers, New York
Age 25, Date of Birth 22 Nov 1902 (which is wrong)
Occupation Carpenter
Place of birth Armadale. Scotland
Fathers name Neil, country of fathers birth Scotland
Maiden name of his mother Maggie MacKay, country of mother's birth Scotland
This will be his first marriage
It is signed in his hand so we know he could write
Future address after marriage is listed as 125 Elliott Ave, Yonkers, New York
The marriage took place on 6 Nov 1928 in the city of Yonkers, ceremony performed by A. C. McMillan, minister, who lived at 207 Warburton Ave, Yonkers, county of Westchester, New York. The witnesses are listed as Jessie Watt Noble and Hugh MacKay (undoubtedly his brother Hugh). Jessie lived at 6 Fernbrook St and Hugh lists address of 155 Warburton Ave, assume both are Yonkers. Both Jessie and Hugh signed in their own hand so we know both could write.
1930 Federal Census shows "Alec" ( Alexander), his wife Margaret, and his brother Hugh living together at 150 Livingston Ave. in Yonkers, New York. It shows all three born in Scotland. Alex to US in 1923, his brother Hugh to US in 1928, Margaret to US in 1922. Alex and Margaret are listed as age 27, married at age 26. Hugh is age 23, single. Alex occupation is carpenter in "construction building", Hugh is carpenter apprentice.
When and if he ever returned to Scotland will never be known but we do know that he thought about his family. This is in evidence by a monument he erected in Bettyhill Cemetery, Armadale, Sutherland, Scotland in memory of his parents. You can see the inscription and information on his parents' records. The family has continued to add the names of deceased members even after Alexander's death in the United States.
SSDI shows Alec MacKay, born 14 Nov 1902, Death 29 May 1973, last residence 10705 zip, Yonkers, Westchester, New York. SS# 107-05-4444 issued in New York.
I will need to obtain this certificate, and look for an obituary to see if their were any children.
This is what I have written about his wife:
1928 New York State Marriage License listed the following for Margaret:
Name Maggie Jane Noble
Color White
Place of residence 6 Fernbrook St, Yonkers. New York
Age 25, date of birth 29 Nov 1902
Occupation Domestic
Place of birth Fraserburgh, Scotland
Fathers name James, fathers place of birth Scotland
Mothers maiden name Jane Stewart, mothers place of birth Scotland
This will be her first marriage
License is signed in her hand so we know she could write
See other notes on husband regarding date of actual marriage, witnesses, etc
We have located a death in the Florida Death Index, 1877 to 1998 for a MARGARET JANE MACKAY, date of birth 29 Nov 1902 (matches) age 76, white, in Pinellas County. Date of death is 17 Apr 1979. This is undoubtably her but until we get a copy of this record will not know if there were any children or relatives.
Then this is what I found on her parents and siblings of which she had many. I've not looked for her birth record but I'm sure these are here parents.
1901 Scottish census for Fraserburgh, county of Aberdeen, Scotland, page 35, line 10.
JAMES NOBLE, age 44, estimated birth year 1857, head, male, born in Fraserburgh, Aberdeen, living at 36 College Bounds, Fraserburgh, county of Aberdeenshire, occupation fisherman. With him is his wife Jane Noble, age 31, William Noble, age 15, Andrew Noble, age 11, Annie Noble, age 9, John Noble, age 8, Peter Noble, age 4, Alexander Noble, age 2.
Also, there is a Wilhemina Stewart, age 23, sister in law. This confirms the Stewart maiden name of Jane.
So this is what I have found so far. No new info on Hugh but I may order a copy of his death certificate when I order Alexander's.
