Rich Nichols 2013-08-31++ to Mary Young.
I do know that William Mowatt left his wife and took his children to America, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to be exact. ... I have not been able to find a death record in Philadelphia for William and wonder if he returned back to Scotland? The children all remained and married, except for William, Jr, who died without issue.
2013-09-02 The 1900 census stated that he immigrated in 1890, which is wrong as he was in Scotland in '91, unless he made a trip over and back and then came between 1891-1893, before his sister's accompanied his children. I wonder if Mary came with him on one trip and decided she didn't want to live in America?
The William who landed in Montreal could be him, except that he is arriving in September and his sisters and children were already here in February of 1893.
He most likely came earlier to find a job and a place to live and also to determine if living in America was a better choice than living in Scotland. Life was hard back then in both countries and I don't know which was worse.
I have the military records of his grandfather, and I wonder if his father David also served in the military?
