  General Notes:

Note by Mary Young, April 2014:
In 1911, David and Mary "Polly" Gardner's family included Polly's uncles, Joseph and David Lewis. Unfortunately I don't have the image nor a good transcript of the details - still to be verified.

  Noted events:

Joseph worked as a pier master's assistant, marine engine machinist, sewing machine factory machinist,. 2

3 Apr 1881 census: age 8, workhouse inmate at Union Workhouse, Cockermouth, Cumberland, England. 3

5 Apr 1891 census: age 17, servant to William Armstrong, farmer at Kirklinton, Cumberland, England. Note: this sighting may not be correct - Joseph was nearer 18/19 years of age.

10 Jun 1898: Joseph was married from Ardmory Road, Rothesay, Bute, Scotland (age 24). 1

31 Mar 1901 census: age 27, marine engine machinist, head of household at 1, Prospecthill Street, Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland. 4

3 Apr 1911 census: enumerated at Glasgow.
Joseph Lewis, and his brother, David, were in the household of their niece, Mary (Lewis) Gardner. I have found no trace of Joseph's wife, Sarah McCormick, in this census, nor her death in Scotland after the 1901 census.

Joseph married Sarah McCORMICK [15186] [MRIN: 4253], daughter of John Young McCORMICK [15187] and Mary ARMSTRONG [15188], on 10 Jun 1898 in 113, Naburn Street, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1 (Sarah McCORMICK [15186] was born on 18 Apr 1874 in Springburn, LKS and died on 21 Jan 1943 in 41, Granville Street, Clydebank, Dumbartonshire, Scotland 5.)
