Marna Fielding email 2006-11-18 re Thomas Wilson.
[Thomas Wilson's] first wife was Martha Nichol and she died at the census address on 4th Oct 1887 age 57, father down as George a land drainer, mother Margaret ms I had read as Porter but is either Poter or Potes, cause chronic bronchitis one year.
Thomas's mother Catherine Shearman (Sherman on index) died at 105 Wallace Street St Quivox Ayrshire on 22nd March 1886, widow of James Wilson a weaver, her age is understated as 67, 77 is more likely as she was 40 in 1851, father is given as Richard a deceased labourer/ Catherine ms Kerry also deceased, cause debility and bronchitis, no medical attendant, son William informant . I am unsure as to the accuracy of the information as the name Richard is used for her 6th son and Catherine for her 6th daughter, naming pattern would suggest Thomas and Rosanna. Her birthplace in 1841 is dittoed from her husband's Ireland but 1851-1871 is given as Leith Midlothian. I haven't been able to locate her so far in 1881.
Her husband James was born in Newtonbiddoch, Down, Ireland according to the 1855 child's birth return. Death registered Ayr, died at 46 Elba Street St Quivox, age 76, cotton weaver, married to Catherine Sherman, father William a cotton weaver/ Martha ms unknown, cardiac dropsy 5 weeks, widow her mark informant, These parents match first son and second daughter so presume they are correct. The 1855 girl was their 14th child , 13 of whom survived post 1855, the unlucky one being a Jane born c 1839 who was dead before the 1851 census.
