THEFTS FROM THE PERSON
Patrick Mulrine and James Wilson were charged with assaulting a man named William Conlin, belonging to Port-Glasgow, in Stockwell Street, on 3d January last, and stealing from him 9s. Seven previous convictions, dating from 1864, were libelled against Mulrine, and four against Wilson.
Conlin said he was drinking in Steel's public-house at the Cross on the evening of the 2d January, and on leaving could not find his way to the station. He asked the prisoners at the bar to direct him, and they spoke to him for a little and asked him for a drink.
Lord DEAS - For a drink of water? (Laughter.)
Witness - They asked me to treat them, and offered to take me to a shebeen, but I refused to go. They then dragged me into a close, struck me, and took the money out of my pocket.
Two detective officers said they saw the two prisoners dragging the man into the close and apprehended them. Detective McDonagh proved several of the convictions against Mulrine, including the one of 1864.
A JURYMAN - Do you go by memory?
Witness - Yes.
The JURYMAN - You can recollect them so well?
Witness - Yes. I have been coming here for the last 20 years.
The JURYMAN - And you remember them all?
Witness - Yes.
Lord DEAS - If he did not remember the prisoners, I can remember this witness. (Laughter.)
The jury, without leaving the box, found the prisoners guilty as libelled.
Lord DEAS said Mulrine appeared to have had a very long career of crime, in fact he had hardly ever seen so many convictions against a prisoner. The sentence in his case might be made more than that of the other, but each of them would be sent to penal servitude for seven years.
Mulrine left the dock singing a snatch of a song.
