  • Born: 1842, Glasgow 1 2
  • Marriage: Jane PORTER [303] on 27 Sep 1861 in Calton District, Glasgow 1
  • Died: 25 Nov 1890, Woodilea Asylum, Lenzie, Dunbarton, Scotland aged 48 3

Other names for William were William KELLY and William MATHER.

  General Notes:

William Kelly changed his name to WILLIAM MATHER at the time of his marriage, probably out of respect for his stepfather, Alexander Mather.

  Noted events:

William worked as a tobacco pipe maker. 1 3 4

30 Mar 1851 census: William Kelly, age 9, visiting with Hugh O'Neil, labourer at 94, Great Eastern Road, Glasgow, LKS. I can find no trace of William Kelly's parents in this census. His father Richard may have already died - but where was his mother, Agnes (Barbour) Kelly? 5

7 Apr 1861 census: William Kelly, age 19, pipe maker, stepson of Alexander Mather at 85, Candleriggs, Glasgow. 6

27 Sep 1861: William was married from 85, Candleriggs, Glasgow (as "William Mather"). William Kelly changed his name at marriage to William Mather, and used that name throughout the rest of his life. Six of his children were given "Kelly" as a middle name. 1

1881 census: enumerated at 19, Struthers Street, Glasgow.

Researcher: Ken Stevens. I missed William Mather's death! When looked at online indexes, I didn't think Kirkintilloch to be a relevant place. Having now looked at it, I can see that it is the right one :- Name, occupation, real father Richard's occupation, mother's m.s. and wife's details tally.
The fact that his parents forenames were reported as William & Ann, rather than Richard/Alexander & Agnes would be more likely as garbled perceptions of informant son rather than as differences of fact.

William married Jane PORTER [303] [MRIN: 73], daughter of Henry PORTER [306] and Ann BOWIE [307], on 27 Sep 1861 in Calton District, Glasgow.1 (Jane PORTER [303] was born in 1843 in Leith, Edinburgh, MLN 7 and died on 20 Dec 1916 in Barnhill Poorhouse, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland 8.)

Noted events in their marriage were:

1881: they resided at 19, Struthers Street, Glasgow. 2
