Francis Carnwath, Robert and Jane's eldest daughter had a son born out of wedlock, he was named JOHN CAMPBELL CARNWATH and was born 23 January 1879. His mother married a Robert Ferguson on 19 March 1880 and went on to have 7 further children all named Ferguson. I suspect that John is this son of Francis; as you know at this time it was considered a scandal to be born out of wedlock and I suspect that Jane brought up this grandson as a son. I have found that this was very common at this time and have one family who suddenly have a 2 year old son in a census when they are both in their 70's - again a child of a daughter who was unmarried.
I do not have a birth certificate for John and received this information about him from a family called Wright who are descended from one of Francis's other children, James Ferguson.
